• The gate scrapes the rail or concrete at one end. Flat-spotted rollers reduce the wheel’s effective diameter by a fraction of an inch, which is enough for the gate’s low corner to drag. The sound is a rasping scrape, not a squeal.
• The gate has visible rock when you push on it mid-span. A worn roller allows vertical play. If you can lift the gate a quarter inch by hand at the free end, at least one roller is shot and the hinge has likely started to elongate its bolt holes.
• You hear a repeating clunk as the gate travels. That’s a flat spot on the roller wheel passing the rail joint every revolution. It comes and goes in rhythm with wheel rotation, not with the motor cycle.
• The gate sags and the motor works harder to move it. Once the hinge side drops, the chain or belt sees increased load. On Viking operators, we often find the amp draw climbing right before a coupling or limit failure follows. Fixing the hinge early prevents that second repair.
