Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Tarzana Owner’s Guide

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s swing gate operators, especially the APeX, LRA, and older L-Series residential units, all rely on welded or fabricated attachment points that take abuse every cycle. The parts we fabricate and install most often are the actuator mounting brackets, gate hinge plates, and weld-on ears for the operator arm. Slide gate models like the SL series have their own set of welded components, mainly the chain brackets and limit-stop tabs.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Linear changed the mounting hole pattern between the old L-Series and the newer APeX line. A bracket that fits a 2012 LRA operator won’t bolt to a 2018 APeX without an adapter plate or fresh fabrication. We measure the bolt spacing on site and fabricate to match, because guessing here means a gate that binds or a weld that fails in six months. If you have the original Linear part number stamped on the bracket, that helps us match it before we start cutting. If not, we take measurements and photograph everything before we touch the metal.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for brackets and weld plates, a properly fabricated aftermarket piece made from 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch steel usually outlasts the original Linear stamping. We use thicker stock than most OEM brackets because the Salt and dry heat in Tarzana accelerate metal fatigue at the weld points. For internal Linear parts like limit switches and control boards, we use OEM or direct-equivalent replacements, not generic substitutes.

Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate scrapes the ground near the hinge side. This usually means a hinge plate has torn loose from the post or the weld around the hinge barrel has cracked, letting the gate drop on that corner.
• The operator arm makes a popping sound at the end of travel. The actuator mounting bracket has likely elongated its bolt holes or cracked near the weld, so the arm shifts under load instead of pushing cleanly.
• You can see daylight through a crack in the bracket or weld joint. Cracks in steel don’t heal. Once visible, the part is a few hundred cycles from failing completely.
• The gate is harder to open manually than it was six months ago. Weld fatigue changes the hinge geometry, which makes the gate bind and the Linear operator pull more amps than it should.
• Rust staining runs down from a hinge or bracket. In Tarzana’s dry climate, rust usually means the weld was never properly sealed or galvanized, and the joint is failing from the inside out.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check on your own: look at the hinge plates and actuator bracket with a flashlight and see if there are visible cracks, loose bolts, or a gap between the bracket and the gate frame. Take a photo with your phone. That documentation helps us quote accurately over the phone, and it helps you compare what we tell you against what you saw.

What you shouldn’t do is attempt the weld yourself. Even a small fabrication job on a gate means supporting the gate’s weight, keeping the hinge geometry true while welding, and making sure the weld doesn’t pull the bracket out of square as it cools. A bad weld on a Linear operator bracket can snap without warning and send a 300-pound gate swinging into a car or a person. We use a fixture to hold the part in position while welding, then we set the operator limits and photograph the final position. That’s the job.
